The students will learn and use various systems such as metric, apothecary, and household, gain working knowledge on drug dosage calculations, learn how to properly interpret a prescription, and competently process a prescription. Learn medical terminology and pharmacy abbreviations, acquire skills in documentation of important information in the pharmacy, learn about the history of pharmacy, obtain working knowledge of forms and regulations affecting health care providers, learn skills necessary to ensure proper reimbursement and billing requirements and have knowledge of different insurances available to patients. Students will have a better understanding of the drug information found in each drug label.
Pharmacy Ethics and Law
The students will learn conversions of measurement systems, learn drug pricing, telephone etiquette and customer service, learn and observe the laws governing the profession of pharmacy, including the pharmacy code of ethics. Students will learn all the different guidelines of what a technician can and cannot do.
The students will learn conversions of weight and measurement systems, perform parenteral dosage calculations, acquire knowledge in hospital pharmacy operations including the different types of drug distribution systems, learn the concepts of unit dose systems, acquire proper skills in material management of pharmaceuticals, Learn about the management of long term care and different types of medical insurances. The students will learn the pharmaceutical calculations necessary for compounding pharmaceuticals.
Hospital Pharmacy (Unit dose & IV Admixture)
The students will learn the conversions of weights and measurement systems, learn the calculation of medications with specific gravity and percentage of each specific medication, learn about drug use control process and all important factors involved, learn the proper skills to fill patients medication cassettes and to perform in house packaging, learn how to perform calculations using the process of allegation. The students will obtain a working knowledge of intravenous admixtures such as iv piggy backs, large volume parenteral, total parenteral nutrition, also learn the pharmaceutical calculations applied when preparing iv admixtures, students will have a understanding of cancer and its treatment. Students will learn the proper procedures in preparing chemotherapy and the proper techniques used when preparing chemotherapy. Aseptic technique is stressed in this course. Students learn the proper steps of aseptic technique as used in 797 protocols. Students will learn to calculate dosages using ration strength, acquire knowledge of regulatory standards of the pharmacy practice, learn the different types of poisons and their specific antidotes
The students will be trained in professional development which will prepare the student for their job search. The student will know how to prepare a resume and a professional portfolio. The students will also know what a proper outfit for an interview entails, and have the confidence to go into a job interview and feel prepared and able to successfully complete an interview.
The students will complete a 160 hour retail or hospital externship, once additional hospital testing is completed and passed. The student will have the opportunity to apply all the skills and knowledge acquired through the program in an actual pharmacy. The student will work under the direct supervision of a Registered Pharmacist. This will give the students hands on experience in the profession that they have studied and chosen to be their new career.
